MKS Telvac utilises co-ordinate measuring machine

cnc,cnc machines, cnc milling machines, cnc lathe, used cnc machines March 25th, 2010 by cnc machines cnc manufacturers Industries, cnc machine tools, cnc programming, cnc controller admin

Hexagon Metrology has revealed that MKS Telvac has invested in a Global Performance co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) to complement its range of test and inspection equipment.

MKS Telvac specialises in the production of high-quality machined components and complex electromechanical assemblies to ultra-high vacuum standards for the scientific, semiconductor and medical industries.

The company’s resources comprise advanced machine shop facilities including a range of modern CNC machines that are programmed centrally using CAD/CAM systems; clean-room and assembly facilities; and a fully equipped quality control department.

MKS Telvac recently invested in a high-precision Global Performance CMM from Hexagon Metrology to keep pace with demand for its output.

Mathew Ensor, machine shop manager at MKS Telvac, said: ‘In order to help satisfy the growing demand for our output, we recently purchased a high-throughput, five-axis machining centre.

‘As part of the same investment programme, to enable our inspection department to keep pace with increasing levels of production, we considered the various advantages of several high-accuracy CNC CMMs.

‘Having had in-depth demonstrations of a number of alternative CMMs, we purchased a DEA Global Performance from Hexagon UK,’ he added.

Several factors influenced MKS Telvac’s purchasing decision.

The machine’s use of PC-DMIS Pro software was one factor, as the company said PC-DMIS is easy to use, has minimised the potential for errors and has ensured operators have experienced a reduced learning curve.

As the Global Performance is available in a range of sizes, the company was able to order a machine that matches the dimensions of its current components and assemblies with scope for larger parts, should they be specified by customers.

Hexagon claims that the cost-effective DEA Global range brings affordability to multi-sensor technology and that the machines are ideal for users that need to undertake a variety of metrology operations on a single CMM.

Based on a modular design, Global Performance models are available in a range of sizes, from X-axis of 500-1200mm, Y-axis of 500-3000mm, Z-axis of 500-1000mm, and can be configured according to each customer’s measurement needs.

The machine can be equipped with touch-trigger probes, for efficient single-point measurements on prismatic elements, and analogue scanning probes that support high-accuracy scanning operations on complex contoured parts.

PC-DMIS Pro software provides the user with an intuitive graphical user interface, including a suite of ‘wizards’ to help operators quickly learn and manipulate key inspection functions.

The metrology software’s features include a full programming environment with high-level programming functions, customisable menus and quick start routines for probe qualifications, part alignments and hyper reporting functions.

For traceability, PC-DMIS Pro has a suite of adaptable reporting and advanced hyper reporting tools.

Ensor said: ‘Now installed in our air-conditioned inspection department, our Global Performance CMM has allowed us to further develop our already advanced inspection function.

‘We have received excellent levels of support, in terms of off-line programming and instant access to help on the phone from Hexagon.

‘The machine has removed any potential for part-inspection bottlenecks as its CNC capability enables us to place a part on the machine’s granite bed and instigate an automatic part programme.

‘As the Global Performance is able to operate both quickly and accurately, it is able to give our operators almost instant size verification of first-offs and also complete long and complex measuring routines unattended.

Haas unveils enhanced vertical machining centres

cnc,cnc machines, cnc milling machines, cnc lathe, used cnc machines March 23rd, 2010 by cnc machines cnc manufacturers Industries, cnc machine tools, cnc programming, cnc controller admin

Haas Automation has designed and redesigned a number of new and improved machines for 2010.

The latest Haas VF models benefit from enhanced motion control to ensure smooth, precise motion control.

The new Haas vertical machining centres (VMCs) use next-generation digital servomotors and high-resolution encoders on all axes.

Combined
with software and motor-control advancements, the machines give even
better surface-finish performance and higher accelerations.

Haas
has redesigned the chip pans and reviewed the coolant flow of the new
VMCs to reduce chip build-up and efficiently flush chips into the auger
trough for removal.

For
high-volume-production applications, the VF-1 through VF-6 VMCs are
available with optional chip-removal systems that combine multiple side
augers with either a front discharge auger or belt-type conveyor, to
move chips out of the machines faster.

To
prevent chip and coolant egress during machining, the new VF machines
feature optimised enclosures, providing better panel fit, easier
maintenance access and the simpler internal routing of plumbing and
cables.

The result is a better
enclosure and a simpler overall design that contains chips and coolant,
while increasing reliability and simplifying service, according to the
company.

The new VF machines have
also been given a contemporary redesign, as well as better fit, feel
and ergonomics, to make operation easier and more efficient.

The
2010 ST-series Haas turning centres has also been enhanced and include:
a redesigned base casting, which increases rigidity and improves chip
and coolant flow.; a compact, symmetrical spindle head, which increases
rigidity and improves thermal stability; a redesigned tailstock with
shorter geometry to improve cutting performance; an optional automatic
tool probe with an interface, simplifying tool setup, which can be
programmed to check for tool breakage during unattended operation; and
a redesigned live tooling option, which is gear driven for efficient
power transmission and continuous maximum torque.

The Haas DT-1 is a high-speed drill and tap machine with full CNC milling capabilities.

It has a 508 x 406 x 394mm work area and a 660 x 381mm T-slot table.

A 30-taper spindle provides 15,000rev/min and allows tapping at speeds of up to 5,000rev/min.

The DT-1 also comes with a high-speed 20-pocket tool changer and rapids of 61m/min on all axes.

With high acceleration and deceleration rates, cycle times are kept short and non-cutting time is reduced.

The DT-1 is described as an all-round CNC machine tool for the busy general-machining workshop.

Delcam’s FeatureCAM helps students at the Invention Factory produce guitars in 15 hours

cnc,cnc machines, cnc milling machines, cnc lathe, used cnc machines March 21st, 2010 by cnc machines cnc manufacturers Industries, cnc machine tools, cnc programming, cnc controller admin

The Invention Factory and Makery in Manoa, Hawaii, used Delcam’s FeatureCAM feature-based CAM system as part of a project to train 24 students to design and build their own Hawaiian electric steel guitars. The software enabled the students to produce CNC programs to make almost every part in the instrument.

“FeatureCAM reduced the time required to program a typical part from a day with our previous software to a few minutes,” said Neil Scott, Director of the Invention Factory and Makery. “The result was that our students were able to design and build their own electric guitar from scratch in only 15 hours.”

The limited depth and breadth of Hawaii’s workforce opportunities continue to remain major reasons why start-up companies fail to grow, local students leave for the mainland, and a significant third industry behind tourism and defence has yet to appear. The concept of the Invention Factory and Makery is to provide an environment in which high-school and middle-school students can conceive an invention and actually make it. By learning to design and build things, students develop the skills needed to work in home-grown industries as entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists, machine operators and CNC programmers.

“The biggest obstacle we had to overcome in developing the curriculum was to simplify the design and programming process,” said Instructor Raemi Shibata. “The software that we used in the past required so much knowledge that it was bewildering. How could we teach the kids when we were having trouble understanding it ourselves?”

“FeatureCAM provides the ability to automatically recognise features such as holes, slots, pockets and bosses in CAD models,” explained Mr. Scott. “This means that students don’t have to deal with each individual surface but can program a much smaller number of features instead. We train the students to import the model and use feature recognition so that the software automatically recognises and organises the features in the part. The students then review the list of features identified by the software and make any changes they wish.”

After the students are satisfied with the list of features, the next step is assigning machining operations to each one. With help from the software, the students created machining operations by picking tools, and speeds and feeds for creating particular features. When making a typical part, there are often many features that are duplicated, so the machining operation to make these features only needs to be defined once. After that, it can be copied to similar areas of the design.

After finishing the program, students viewed a simulated version on the computer screen. They check this to be sure the part is made exactly as intended and that the tools stay clear of the machine and fixtures. The program is then passed to the CNC machine and the parts for the guitars completed.
